What is the Class 1 MELT Program BC?

At Gold Star, we specialize in Class 1 training in Burnaby. In 2021, ICBC along with the Ministry of Transport announced the implementation of the Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) program in BC. To learn more about MELT, check out this post as we outline everything about the Class 1 MELT program in BC.

The MELT program in BC is 140 hours of training. 93 hours of this is practical training. During your practical training, you will drive one-on-one with a qualified and certified instructor. You will learn skills such as chaining tires, sliding axles, coupling/uncoupling, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, mountain driving, and various types of backing (alley dock, blind side, straight line).

The remaining 47 hours is theoretical training. At our Burnaby driving school, we're happy to offer this portion of the MELT program online. Our classes run twice a week in the evenings. This ensures our students don't need to take time off work to attend these classes. During your 47 hours of theory, you will learn about trip inspections, air brakes, driving manoeuvres, hours of service, log books, and cargo securement among others.

The program takes approximately between 6-8 weeks to complete in full, but we've had students complete it in as little as 30 days! Get in touch with our driving school in Burnaby to sign up or visit our MELT page for more information.
